TAXING TAX TIME

Thanks to VITA and TCE, for some, tax time doesn't have to be taxing. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) prepares tax returns at no charge for those earning $42,000 or less. VITA sites are usually located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, and malls. To locate a site near you call 1-800-829-1040.

TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) provides free tax counseling and preparation of basic income tax returns at no charge for those age 60 and older of all income levels. Call 1-800-829-1040 for additional information.

As part of the TCE program, the AARP offers Tax-Aide where counselors help people of low to middle income, usually $45,00 or less, with special attention to those age 60 and older. Call 1-888-227-7669.

You may also access these helpful sites online. AARP at www.aarp.org/money/taxaide. VITA and TCE at www.irs.gov. (On the IRS site, click on Individual, the first item on the menu bar just under the top banner. Then scroll down to Free Tax Return Preparation For You by Volunteers.)
